BURNT ISLAND with very special solo guest, AIDAN MOFFAT, plus a one-off joint performance by THE SECOND HAND MARCHING BAND & BENNI HEMM HEMM MINI ALBUM LAUNCH – MARCH 7th, MONO Burnt Island launch their new mini album, Music and Maths, on Chaffinch Records on March 15th. Their debut single ‘The Moments Before/Timeless Colour’ (Dead Light Records) was a sombre, spectral torch song with sparse verses that opened out into choral choruses, encapsulating an approach where quiet is louder and less is more. From folky to lo-fi, from dark to bright, this six-track follow-up continues in the same vein but features a fuller, richer sound. This one-off launch night will also feature a special solo performance by Scotland’s unofficial poet laureate, Aidan Moffat. Whether with Arab Strap, his Best-Ofs, dealing in music, art or spoken word, there’s no-one quite like him. Expect strange wee instruments, twisted romantic ballads and possibly a children’s nursery rhyme. Really. And as if that wasn’t enough, the bill also features a unique performance by The Second Hand Marching Band & Benni Hemm Hemm, two fine, sprawling collectives uniting for what will surely be some beautiful noise and, let’s face it, not much room on stage. ABOUT BURNT ISLAND: Burnt Island is based around the songs of award-winning novelist and biographer Rodge Glass. The band have at both the Triptych and Connect festivals, as well as supported the likes of A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Hjaltalin, Sleeping States and The Phenomenal Handclap Band in 2009, with upcoming supports including These New Puritans and Emma Pollock. Rodge contributed to Ballads of the Book, an album released in 2007 by Chemikal Underground Records which featured collaborations between authors and musicians. He co-wrote and performed the track ‘The Fire’ together with highly influential folk legend Vashti Bunyan.
