willie thrasher

In our tenth playback series we team up with the outstanding Light In The Attic Records again. Their next reissue is Spirit Child by Canadian Inuit singer-songwriter, Willie Thrasher. In the late sixties, Thrasher formed one of the first Inuit rock bands, The Cordells, and played mostly contemporary music and cover songs. By the mid-seventies, Thrasher changed his musical style and began to tap into his Aboriginal roots instead of the charts for inspiration. Thrasher explored his traditional Inuit roots and spoke out about political issues.

In 1981, Thrasher recorded his psych-folk debut LP, Spirit Child where we hear echoes of Neil Young and Creedence Clearwater Revival but injected with Native consciousness, storytelling, poetry, history, and ceremony. Several tracks from the record are also featured on LITA’s acclaimed 2015 Polaris Prize nominated compilation, Native North America (Vol.1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock and Country 1966-1985.

Join us at Mono for an exclusive playback and Let Spirit Child open your ears, heart, and mind to a new folk-rock reality, with the indigenous heartbeat sound of this trailblazing troubadour.

“brilliant garage-rock fuzz, pedal steel-laced heartache, singer-songwriter Earth love, radical politics and the occasional lyrics in Inukitut.” – Rolling Stone
