Another weekend, another Saturday night down at Mono with the freshest new music around. Coming upβ¦
STEFAN MURPHY and THE ATHLETES OF SOUL
Our Punk-Soul-Brother Stefan Murphy Returns to Glasgow and we’re delighted to have his presence and songs here at Mono! In January Freakender (tastes buts on point) brought Stefan to Glasgow while he was on a solo tour around Scandanavia and his homeland of Ireland. This was his first show in Glasgow since supporting Malcolm Middleton around 10 years previous. What started out as a winters cold Sunday evening soon cooried up into a warm hearted, joyous night with Stefan playing a best of back catalog, harking back to a more stripped back, “brass knuckles” version of his music that he made in his earlier years (The Mighty Stef, Count Vaseline), where storytelling lyrics and the clarity of them take precedence over busier and more experimental production.
Stefan Murphy, from Dublin Ireland now living in Atlanta GA has shared the stage with: Jonathan Richman, The Fall, Black Lips, King Khan, Happy Mondays, Television Personalities, Jeffrey Lewis, Dead Boys, Boomtown Rats, Rancid, The Stooges, Queens Of The Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Libertines and wait for it… Alice Cooper!!
For this tour Murphy will be performing with a different backing band or different musicians depending on the region, city, and in some cases just depending on the show. He has collaborated with many inspiring musicians in the last few years using this blueprint and now it’s time to roll out the concept on tour as The Athletes of Soul.Β To date members of Black Angels, The Germs, Ariel Pink, The Pogues, Reigning Sound, Ash, Altered Images, One Dove, Fontaines DC, Badlands, Republic Of Loose, Foxygen, Hickoids. Warbly Jets to name but a small few Athletes of Soul have been a part of the magic.
A true gentleman and a fine example of a what a human should be. We fully recommend anyone who loves the art of song and performance put this in their diary!
